How to Stop Mold Growth in Bathrooms

Bathroom

Are you sick and tired of constantly cleaning the black ingrowth from your Wichita bathroom tiles and grout? Have you noticed that no matter how much you clean, the black stuff always comes back? Well, you are not alone in this battle.

It seems to be unavoidable. We clean our Wichita bathroom floors regularly and perform proper maintenance, but still mold persists to form on our tiles and grout. It is not only unattractive, but it can pose serious health problems for our families and cause extensive damage to our homes.

The bad news is that it is not possible to remove mold from our bathrooms by performing weekly cleaning. Cleaning removes only the mold that is on the surface. However, if there is mold on the tiles, then you can be sure that there is much more of it inside the walls and beneath the tiles. The only proper way to get rid of it is to remove the source of its growth, which usually means the moisture source. Just removing the mold without fixing the water problem will result in the mold coming back.

Mold needs four things in order to grow: water, food, air and a suitable temperature. It can grow in areas completely devoid of light. It can grow inside the walls of our bathrooms without any notice. And bathrooms create a perfect environment for mold to grow because of the way showers are still constructed today. In conventional assembly, the shower pan liners are placed below the mortar setting bed, allowing the moisture to saturate the mortar bed. Studies have shown that a standard 3’x4′ shower base can hold constantly up to 9 gallons of water. Within this water contact, dirt, oil and soap filter through the concrete filling up the weep holes, which then provide the perfect nutrients for mold and other bacteria to flourish. The first symptom which homeowners immediately recognize is the appearance of dark spots along the grout lines and bubbling paint on the dry walls outside the shower.

We spend one third of our lives in our Wichita bedrooms and since our bedrooms are often attached to our bathrooms, we live unknowingly and without permission in a symbiotic environment with bacteria. If the problem persists over an extended period of time, it eventually affects our health and damages our homes.

Fortunately, there is also some good news. We can overcome the mold problem in our bathrooms by conducting a proper renovation that will install a waterproof shower system just underneath the tiles around the shower.

One of the systems that has proven to be effective is a new shower system in which individual components collectively form a bonded watertight assembly directly beneath the tiles of the shower. This prevents the water moisture from leaking into the surrounding material and therefore blocks mold and mildew from forming. The water that is absorbed into the grout lines or tiles evaporates immediately. This causes the shower to dry very quickly, which further eliminates moisture from the environment. Mold, mildew or other bacteria can no longer grow because the potential for moisture accumulation has been eliminated.
